Lecture by Dr Maya Wind at 15-17, 3 September in LUX aula (upper), Helgonavägen 3 in Lund. Welcome!
Dr Maya Wind is an Israeli anthropologist and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr Wind gained high acclaim with her powerful book “Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom” (Verso Books, 2024). In this work, Dr Wind provides extensive evidence to challenge the notion that Israeli universities are ‘liberal bastions of freedom and democracy’. Beyond discussing these institutions’ direct complicity in atrocity crimes, she also explains how they stifle dissent among students and faculty, not only on their own campuses but also in relation to Palestinian academic institutions, scholars, and students. Dr Wind documents how Israeli universities directly constrain Palestinian rights by supporting and even developing the policies of occupation and apartheid used by the Israeli state.
