(Stockholm, July 23rd, 2024)- Stockholm has joined an EU-wide solidarity action on the morning of July 23rd at its local EC Representation, demanding justice for Palestinians. This protest call comes after over 9 months of the ongoing Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, as well as escalating aggression in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and follows the July 19th ruling by the International Court of Justice which requires national governments to further isolate the state of Israel politically and economically.
The date July 23 was chosen as the anniversary of the formation of the European Steel and Coal Community – the first predecessor to the EU – and also the date of the first external trade meeting of the newly elected European Parliament.
According to the United Nations, at least 38 664 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli Occupation Forces in Gaza since October 7, 2023, and 553 Palestinians have been killed in the Occupied West Bank (including 131 children). The prestigious medical journal The Lancet has recently issued a warning that the true death toll of the genocide in Gaza could be ’conservatively’ estimated at over 186,000, accounting for 8% of Gaza’s population.
In the morning hours of July 23rd, activists entered Europahuset, where the European Commission has their office in Stockholm, and staged a die in to showcase the brutality of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
The activists have delivered a list of demands, joining others across the EU, calling on the EC and its individual personnel to use their power and influence to achieve justice for Palestine. The list of demands to the EC and its personnel is as follows:
